Mark Gonzales: Poetry Masterclass and Performance Series

Join us in London and Birmingham for a two-city poetry masterclass and performance series with HBO Def Jam poet Mark Gonzales.

We’re pleased to announce that we’re hosting HBO Def Jam poet and Stanford University lecturer Professor Mark Gonzales’ UK Debut in February. This follows an ongoing demand by our members for workshops to help develop poetry writing and performance.

On these one-day workshops - scheduled for London and Birmingham and aimed at very small groups of up to 20 per workshop - Mark will be working with participants to develop their own style of writing, and helping them to realise this use of creative language in defence of, and affirmation of humanity.

This is a unique opportunity to learn from a world renowned master in a setting that promises both intimacy and intensity and is an absolute must if you want to further develop your art.

'An Evening with Mark Gonzales'
Both workshops will be followed by the opportunity to meet the man through a special performance in the evening where the maestro shares his thoughts, philosophies and thought-provoking performances to UK audiences for the first time ever.

Creative language has the simultaneous ability to invoke memory and vision, transforming both the reader and the speaker. In this workshop, participants will examine the essential writing foundations behind the reasons why we write, the relationship between the author and the stories they tell, and the responsibilities that come with the aforementioned. All participants will be supported in crafting individual narratives in a collective setting through a range of topics that span identity, trauma, resiliency, and imagination.

13:00 - 13:45        Lunch and dhohar prayer

13:45 - 16:00        Session 2: Wage Beauty | Development of Stage | Turning Literature into Performance

The ability to communicate ideas on paper into life before an audience is a craft. This session will engage the participants in developing the skills necessary that are critical to captivating an audience in a creative, engaging, and meaningful way. Participants may bring a poem already in process but in need of polishing, or use a piece of work crafted from the earlier day session.
