North West Launch of the Young Muslim Writers Awards

On the 2nd December 2009, the North West launch of the Young Muslim Writers Awards took place at Rochdale's Grand Hall. Over 150 children attended and worked with authors Sufiya Ahmed, Anna Perera and Qasira Shahraz to develop their writing skills.
Authors read extracts from their own work, spoke about how they became writers and led the children in creative writing workshops.
Erica Gott, EMA Consultant for Secondary Education, praised the launch saying, “The feedback I’ve had from teacher and pupils has been really positive and I know that they appreciated all the effort that the authors went to, to travel to Rochdale. As one Year 3 [pupil] put it, ‘Wow, they came just for us Miss!’”
Author Sufiya Ahmed commented that, ‘As a children’s writer I always enjoy such days... All the pupils expressed interest in entering the Under 16s competition and as one of the judges, I am really looking forward to reading the entries that will emerge from Rochdale.’
