The Muslim Writers Awards seeks to encourage and support young writers to become the confident communicators of tomorrow. MWA provide the platform which young writers can use to harness their skills, investing in their writing talent and turning it into a long-term interest kept up way into the future.

 

New Categories for Young Muslim Writers

HSBC Mini Muslims and Money
The Muslim Writers Awards is partnering with HSBC Amanah to introduce a separate Awards category for school children from Schools across the UK.

Mini Muslims and Money is a project designed to encourage the exploration and discussion of ideas related to spending and saving money without interest, from an early age, by submitting a short story or piece of poetry centred on this theme. Winners will receive prizes and be announced at the Young Muslim Writers Awards ceremony. Deadline: 1st April 2010. For more information contact Yasin Macci on yasin.macci@hsbc.com

MYH Star'X'd: Shakespeare Shook Up
Muslim Youth Helpline is association with the MWA present Star'X'd; a short story competition where writers are asked to Reinvent Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ from the perspective of a young British Muslim in 2010.

Winners of the 14-19 and 20-25 will receive cash prizes of £400 and will be announced at the Young Muslim Writers Awards. Deadline: March 31, 2010 For more details visit www.muslimyouth.net/competitions

Guidelines on Categories

The Under 16’s categories are split between short stories and poetry submissions. Short stories must not exceed 3,000 words and poetry submissions can either be one poem or a collection of up to three poems. These categories are broken down further by age into the following: Ages 8 – 10 Ages 11 – 13 Ages 14 - 16

 

Conditions of Entry

  1. All submissions must be in English
  2. All entrants must be original and the authors own unaided work.
  3. All submission should be typed, in a Word document format, double spaced on one side of white A4 paper and in size 12 Times New Roman font or Arial with numbered pages.
  4. Entrants cannot submit more than one submission per category.
  5. Short stories should not exceed the 3000 word limit and poetry should be no longer than 40 lines.
  6. All submissions must be entered via email to submissions@muslimwritersawards.org.uk with a completed entry form.
  7. The name of the author must not appear anywhere on the typescript.
  8. Once received, entries cannot be subsequently amended.
  9. Submissions will not be accepted after Friday 26th February 2010
  10. The decisions of the judging panel are final and binding, and Muslim Writers Awards will not enter into correspondence or negotiation about the results.
  11. Young Muslim Writers Awards winners will be announced at an awards ceremony to be held in May 2010. More details will be available closer to the time.
  12. Details of winners will be made available on the Muslim Writers Awards website after the Awards ceremony.
  13. Each winner will agree to take part in publicity for the promotion of the Awards which will include - but is not restricted to- his/her name and photograph being used. Writers will not receive payment for this.
  14. Winners will retain the copyright to their work but grant Muslim Writers Awards the right to publish their work in the anthology and excerpts on the Muslim Writers Awards website.
  15. Submissions must not infringe any copyright or contain defamatory or otherwise unlawful matter.
  16. The submission of an entry will be deemed to imply the unqualified acceptance of these conditions of entry.
